Villa Description
The Great House accommodates 16 guests – eight in the main house and eight in the four chattel houses. However, an additional four guests may be accommodated for an additional daily rate.
The main house's ground floor has a spacious entrance hall, reception rooms, Piano Room, wrap-around covered terraces and one bedroom suite. The sweeping staircase leads up to a further three bedroom suites. Three suites have double beds, and one has twins. All the suites are individually furnished and the beds, dressed in Ralph Lauren linen, are sumptuously comfortable. The three upstairs suites have individual balconies, while the ground floor suite opens onto a cobbled courtyard.
The four chattel houses are arranged in two pairs – the Pink Chattels and the Blue Chattels, taking their names from the colours of their linens and fabrics. Each pair interlinks, making them ideal for families with younger children. They can be furnished with double or twin beds. The chattel houses open out onto their own verandas, with the gardens beyond. Like the suites in the main house, all the chattels have en suite bathrooms with walk-in showers, air conditioning and safes.
The Great House positively welcomes children. We have a cot, high chair, steriliser and baby monitor and can arrange a nanny from our list of preferred suppliers.
Turtle Beach is on the west coast of Barbados, near to Speightstown, in the parish of St Peter. The Great House was designed as a family house by celebrated local architect Ian Morrison in the traditional plantation style and is constructed from local coral stone. The four chattel houses close to the main house were added later and are also traditional in style – chattel houses were originally built to accommodate plantation workers.
The house stands in approximately 1.5 acres of what is generally acknowledged to be one of the most beautiful gardens on the island. These grounds spill onto the white sand beach with its palm trees and, beyond, the blue waters of the Caribbean.
The main house's interior has recently been extensively refurbished by international interior designer Lynne Pemberton in a style that blends East Coast sophistication, Barbadian flair and beachside informality.
Every aspect of The Great House encourages guests to enjoy themselves in the way they choose. There is ample space to indulge yourself in moments of solitude, yet the arrangement of the house and chattels around the pool invites sociability. The service, while always attentive, is unobtrusive.
This is a family beach house for relaxation and pleasure. Many guests find they rarely wish to leave the property during – or, indeed, at the end of – their stay. Many also come back - over 25% of our bookings are made by people who have stayed at The Great House before. What they value is the way The Great House allows them to design their own holiday – as a special party, a spa holiday, a wedding or just a way to spend time with family and friends

efficent House manageress supervises a professional staff of 12.
Victor, the senior butler, together with the rest of the team of maids,
laundresses and gardeners will cater to guests' every need. The boatman
John, works 6 days a week, will not only take guests water skiing but
also for picnic trips, turtle-feeding and snorkelling expeditions or
even shopping excursions to Bridgetown. For guests peace of mind, there
are two watchmen on the premises nightly. |
