Home to one of the world’s most glamorous hotels (Pinks Sands) and beautiful neighbouring islands, (Bequia and Mustique) Canouan, Carib for “island of turtles”, is the third largest in the chain of the Grenadines islands. It covers 3 square miles, and approximately 1,165 people live here. A decade ago this was a sleepy island that only adventurers and yachtsmen knew about.
The boot-shaped, reef encompassed emerald gem now has three resorts on its white sandy shores. A short boat ride to the paradise of the Tobago Cays and Mayreau’s Salt Whistle Bay makes Canouan a ‘dropped of the edge of the world’ luxury destination. From the visitor’s point of view there have always been spectacular beaches, great views, and lovely walks almost everywhere. The island is not only spectacularly beautiful, but offers a huge range of exciting experiences and is above all else, incredibly luxurious.
Our favourite little piece of Canouan is the 15th Century church set back from the beach within the Canouan Resort. The stone masonry and architectural features are a surprise against the backdrop of one of the world’s most beautiful string of small but perfect Caribbean Islands. The island runs a fully equipped water sports centre including scuba lessons with qualified PADI instructors, tennis courts, fitness centre, a fabulous children’s club, windsurfing, sailing on Sunfish, Hobiecat and Zuma, snorkeling, Sport Fishing charters, sailboat charters, day sightseeing trips to other islands including Tobago Cays, Union, Barbados, Grenada, Martinique and St. Lucia, and fishing excursions. Massage and Beauty consultants, Water and Land Taxi Services, Medical Clinic, Bank.
Canouan also has a paved 3000-foot airstrip with tie-down facilities for private aircraft and there are plans to bring in facilities for jets.
On the resort site leisure facilities include an infinity-edge swimming pool, with three-tiered sun tanning deck and cabanas, an out of this world spa offering exclusive ESPA treatments from it’s over the ocean, Palapas which remain unique in the Caribbean, accessible by boat and offering captivating views of the fish-filled lagoon through a glass-bottom floor.
Other leisure facilities provided on the estate include a floodlit tennis centre, an air-conditioned Technogym fitness centre and complimentary Pirates of Pink Sands kids’ club for 3 to 18 year-olds, where the younger guests will experience local culture through workshops and trips.
The spectacular Jim Fazio-designed 18-hole championship golf course – amazing! Carved into such a dramatic landscape, along the ocean’s edge, Canouan Golf Club provides ocean views from every angle and the world’s longest par 3 at 305 yards. A flotilla of yachts, catamarans and powerboats are on standby for trips to nearby islands, including the world-famous Tobago Cays.
The Canouan Regatta has celebrated for over 20 years, held during Easter, features dramatic boat racing, land sports and games, pagents and calypso competitions.
Live music is played every week at both resorts and small local reggae bars play tunes into the night for late night revellers.
